Montis & P1A – A3.3

Deadline to apply to this volunteering scheme: 1 April 2019

MONTIS is an environmental non-governmental organisation. Based in Vouzela, it was created in 2014. Its mission is to create biodiversity value, through the sustainable management of natural heritage in a way that is engaging, transparent, and open to all interested parties.

The activities of the association focus on the active management of properties that it either owns or looks after, which cover more than 150 ha, the majority of which are located in the central region of Portugal (municipalities of Vouzela, São Pedro do Sul, and Arouca).

Plantar Uma Árvore
Lisbon, Sintra-Cascais Natural Park

Principal mountain range in the Lisbon region which provides climate protection from coastal conditions. It is also significant due to its functions in terms of conservation of natural resources, leisure, and nature tourism in the outskirts of the capital. It features unique climate conditions in the central region, similar to those found in mountain oaklands in the north coast of Portugal. Sintra- Cascais is currently threatened by a high density of invasive species, introduced over the last years, in a misguided effort to quickly repopulate the mountain range. Actions mostly take place in sections of the park that are open to the public.

MONTIS:

  • Office work (for example, communication, data base update, selection of measures, among others).
  • Field work support in managed properties (including natural engineering solutions, controlling invasive species, restoration of riparian and forest habitats, planting and seeding of native species, conduct of natural regeneration, among others).

Plantar Uma Árvore:

  • Field work activities such as removal of invasive species, plantations, and promotion of native vegetation.
  • Natural engineering work along water lines.
  • Management of walking trails.
  • Raising awareness among tourists, small landowners, and local entities.
