Emma Furniss-Roe Testimony

“I’m Emma, I’m from the UK and I volunteered at Plantar uma Arvore in Sintra for 4,5 months between August and December. I joined the programme as, after working in finance in London, I was keen for a change and I love nature and hope to work in conservation in the future.
Over my time here, I got involved in a range of different practical work, controlling invasive species in the summer and planting trees in the winter. Although I was interested in nature before, I learnt so much about plants thanks to our coordinator Mariana’s encyclopaedic knowledge. I also got to go on a lot of field trips, including a nature conservation camp for young people in the Azores, truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The team of coordinators, local and other European volunteers were a real pleasure to work with, and Miguel’s commitment to the company and passion for nature really shows. Living with the other volunteers was really special as it allows you to learn so much about each other and become friends for life, even in a short amount of time. I especially loved living in Sintra as there is so much to do in your free time; having the beach and the mountains nearby, plenty of Palaces to explore and Lisbon just a short train ride away.
Overall, I had an unforgettable experience volunteering in Portugal and made some amazing friends and memories along the way.”
